Youth and Sports Minister Eric Thohir claims that the decision is made to maintain public order, following the International Olympic Committee (IOC) called upon all international sports federations Reject Indonesia as host of major sporting events,
The committee also confirmed that any discussion on a potential Olympic bid by Indonesia has been suspended, linking the country to a potential bid for the 2036 Summer Games.
The IOC says talks will resume only if they receive assurances that all athletes, regardless of nationality, will be eligible to compete there in the future.
“We adhere to the principle of maintaining safety, public order and public interest in hosting every international event,” former Inter Milan president Thohir said on his social media account after the Israel Gymnastics Federation described Indonesia’s decision as shocking and heartbreaking.
The IOC will change its qualification principles to guarantee access to all athletes, regardless of their nationality, to either qualification events or the Olympic Games.
While the Indonesian Olympic Committee and the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) have been called to attend a meeting at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne.
Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, rejected visas for Israeli athletes following objections from the government as well as the Council of Islamic Clerics.
Jakarta said the move was in line with Indonesia’s policy of severing ties with Israel unless it recognizes the independence of the State of Palestine.
Thohir said Indonesia understands that as long as it refuses to accept Israeli athletes, it will not be allowed to host any world championships, Olympic and Youth Olympic events or other sporting events under the Olympic umbrella.
He said, however, that Indonesia is committed to continuing to play an active role in various regional and international sporting events.
