New Delhi, Oct 22 (IANS) The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to hold an important two-day meeting with Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all states and Union Territories from Wednesday to review the preparations for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

After the meeting, the Commission is expected to take a decision on rolling out this exercise nationwide.

The meeting, which will be held at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) in Dwarka, New Delhi, will begin in the afternoon and conclude after the morning session on Thursday.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vineet Joshi, including Deputy Election Commissioners and other senior officials will participate.

According to ECI officials, the session will review compliance with the instructions issued during the previous meeting held on September 10, which had outlined the preparatory steps to be completed before starting the SIR process.

During that meeting, the ECI had directed state officials to include as many voters as possible in the previous voter list to reduce the need for re-submission of documents by voters.

Sources said that apart from the preparations for the SIR, many administrative matters are also likely to be discussed.

According to sources, the meeting will assess the status of completion of the tasks assigned to the Chief Electoral Officers last month and identify areas that require further work.

The ECI is expected to finalize specific targets during the two-day deliberations. Sources said the central focus will be on starting the SIR process across the country by the end of this year.

It is also expected to be discussed whether to conduct the special intensive revision across the country simultaneously or in two phases, keeping in mind regional variations such as weather conditions, agricultural cycle, examination schedule and administrative convenience.

This will be the second such meeting of Chief Electoral Officers in more than a month.
