Kolkata, Oct 22 (IANS) All six accused in the Durgapur gang rape case will be produced before a court on Wednesday, with police likely to seek extension of their custody for further investigation in the case.

According to the police, the victim’s arrested male friend Wasif Ali will be presented in the court along with other accused in the case.

Sources said there were inconsistencies in the statements given by the accused persons, including the victim’s male friend, posing challenges to the investigators in conducting the investigation. Therefore, there is a need to increase the custody of the accused to fill the gaps in the investigation process, sources said.

On Tuesday, the statements of two of the six accused in the rape case of a second year medical student were recorded before a judicial magistrate in a court.

Insiders at the Asansol-Durgapur police commissionerate said the statements of the two were recorded under Section 183 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS) 2023, which allows a judicial magistrate to record statements and statements from an accused person or witness during investigation.

After recording the statement before the Judicial Magistrate on Tuesday, both the accused were sent back to custody. Now, with the statements of two of the six accused being recorded before the judicial magistrate, there is a possibility that both may turn government witnesses in the case.

During six days of interrogation, police found discrepancies in the statements of the male friend of the Durgapur gangrape victim and five arrested youths from the local village. Officials said the police are trying to find some missing links in this gang rape case.

On October 10, a second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped by five men in a forested area outside a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur in West Burdwan district.

Based on the complaint of the victim, the police had arrested all the five accused in the first case. Police said that only one person was involved in the physical and sexual assault of the medical student. Later the police arrested the victim’s male friend. The male friend was arrested after investigators found inconsistencies in his answers during questioning. He is also currently in police custody.

Meanwhile, the victim’s father has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the incident to quickly punish the culprits.
