The initiative reflects the Yogi Adityanath government’s commitment towards clean fuel access, economic support for underprivileged families and women’s welfare, a statement said.
Launched in May 2016, the PM-Ujjwala scheme provides LPG connections to rural and underprivileged households in place of traditional fuels like wood, coal and cow dung cakes and improves health and safety in the kitchen. It said Uttar Pradesh has been the lead state in implementing the scheme, where connections have already been provided to 18.6 million families.
Under the new scheme, two free LPG refills per year will be distributed in two phases – October-December 2025 and January-March 2026, with the state’s allocation being ₹1,500 crore.
The government said the first phase benefits 1.23 crore Aadhaar-verified beneficiaries and is implemented through Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum, with an advance amount of Rs 346.34 crore being provided to ensure smooth distribution.
Beneficiaries will purchase 14.2 kg cylinders at the prevailing rate, and the subsidy will be credited to their Aadhaar linked bank accounts within 3”4 days.
Cylinders weighing up to 5 kg or having only one connection are also eligible. It said the Aadhaar verification drive is ongoing to cover all beneficiaries, supported by SMS alerts, an authentication app, additional laptops at distributor points and public awareness through banners and camps.
State and district-level committees will monitor implementation, and a grievance redressal system will ensure that consumer complaints are resolved. It added that the Weights and Measures Department will conduct periodic inspections to ensure that the cylinder contains the full 14.2 kg of gas.
According to the statement, the scheme provides economic relief amid rising petroleum prices, promotes the use of clean fuels in rural areas and contributes to a healthy environment, thereby brightening the Diwali of millions of women and their families.
