According to the official, the company plans to enter the rapidly growing Indian electric car market by 2027-28. Skoda has a global portfolio of electric cars in the premium segment.
“We are evaluating launching electric cars in India during 2027-28 after establishing the local supplier base. By this time, we will get time to establish the supplier base, and the charging infrastructure will also be developed,” Skoda Auto India brand director Ashish Gupta told reporters here.
He said the electric car industry accounts for 10 per cent to 12 per cent of the total segment and is growing very fast. Gupta said that the right policy framework for electric cars will also be ready by 2027-28.
With four models in India, three sedans and one small SUV segment, Skoda Auto India has a market share of 1.7 per cent in terms of volumes, Gupta said.
He said that during the period from January to September 2025, the company sold 53,000 units of the four models. “Small SUV models have helped Skoda Auto India significantly in increasing its market share,” he said.
The four models introduced in India are the Kia Sportage, Slavia, Kushaq and Kodiaq.
Gupta said that new customers have come due to reduction in GST. Whereas 18 percent GST is applicable on small SUVs and 40 percent GST on sedans.
He said that the company currently has 315 customer touchpoints across the country. Gupta said the plan is to increase these to 350 by 2025 by focusing on Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
With its production base in Pune, the company exports its products to the Middle East and Africa.
Gupta said the company aims to retain market share and remain at the seventh position as a car manufacturer in the country.
