University lecturers five-day walkout during Freshers Week

Web Desk, 08/09/2025

Strike has started University of edinburgh As lecturers and employees start a five -day walkout in protest against proposed Budget deduction Total £ 140 million.

Member of University and college association Are (tip) Hope to maintain picket lines in various university sites Until Friday 12 September.

A rally is also scheduled at 12 noon on Monday afternoon at George Square in the city.

The Sangh stated that its members had “no alternative”, but to take industrial action after the university refuses to dismiss compulsory excesses as part of its savings drive, a step that could be in danger to 1,800 jobs.

The UCU also fought the need for these cuts, described as “the greatest seen” in Scottish higher education, arguing that the university is not currently in deficit.

The union stated that the university was “one of the richest” in the country, and said that it could cut capital expenditure and construction work, or attract employees on its “large reserves” rather than cutting.

In February, the university’s principal professor Sir Peter Maithison said that due to the forecast operating deficit, there is a need to achieve “a small employee base and low operating cost” within 18 months.

The walk-out coincides with the university’s “Welcome Week”, when the new students first come to the campus.

Sophia Woodman, president of the UCU branch, said: “In order to start the students coming to the campus this week, they should be convinced that they will complete their studies in a university that retains their current reputation for excellence and it requires students to perform well in their studies with courses.

“It is impossible, however, to cut 1,800 employees from any university and damage the university’s reputation without seriously affecting teaching, research and student experience.

“Nobody wants to go on strike, but employees are ringing alarm about the effects of these cuts.

“Employees are striking because they have no option but to take action for this week to force the senior management to re -attach, to rule the use of compulsory excesses and to end the dispute.”

Action of a strike, such as working to contract, self -service for duties and not covering absent colleagues, is also going on since 20 June.

UCU general secretary Joe Gradi said: “The University of Edinburgh is a rich institute, which has large reserves.

“Instead of cutting the cuts and loss of job loss, Peter Mathison needs to be committed to listen to employees at the university, attach to the union and rule over the use of mandatory excesses.

“Something and an unprecedented academic barbarity is on an unprecedented scale.”

The university announced last week that It has launched a new voluntary outfit scheme For senior grade employees, with “extended” retirement plan for employees.

In April, it was announced that “approximately 350” employees opted for voluntary outfits under the earlier plan.

Professor Sir Peter Maithison, Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, said: “The higher education sector in the UK is facing serious and essential financial challenges, causing its long -term stability to endanger.

“We have been transparent about the impact of these pressures on Edinburgh and the steps we are taking is to maintain our position as a world-agron university.

“We respect the rights of colleagues to participate in industrial action and we will do everything to reduce any disruption for our students and to reduce any disruptions that are planned for weeks.

“We continue to engage regularly with joint trade unions, employees and our students, and take necessary steps to protect the future of our university.”
