Srinagar, Aug 25 (KDC): The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) staged a protest in Srinagar on Monday, demanding the release of prisoners imposed under the illegal activities (prevention) Act (UAPA), in which party president Mehbooba Mufti described the issue as “humanity” instead of politics.
Addressing reporters during the protest, Mehboba, according to Kashmir.com, said that many imprisoned people come from poor families who cannot take legal battles. He said, “We wanted to hold a protest for innocent people who went to Jail in Jammu and Kashmir and other places today, especially whose parents are not enough to fight a case,” he said.
He urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to handle the issue with the Union Home Minister. The PDP chief insisted, “If the innocent cannot be released, he should at least go to jail in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Concerning the plight of the families, he said: “Poor people cannot go to court. Who takes care of them when they are ill? Who listens to them? It is not about politics; it is about humanity.”
The PDP reiterated its demand for immediate review of cases to ensure that it is called “innocent and soundless”. (KDC)
