Ottawa – Ottawa is closely watching because US President Donald Trump attempts to play the role of a peacemaker in the war in Ukraine.
Canada has voluntarily worked to play a role in helping to help maintain peace in Ukraine, if a ceasefire deal between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelanski could be done, to end the Moscow fight in 2014.
The way the war ends, it can be revived for decades.
“This is an impact and impact on global security on peace around the world,” said Marcus Kolga, a senior partner at the McDonald-Lariers Institute.
Here’s a look at what is at stake for Canada, and how Ottawa can be called to help.
What is happening in the talks?
On 15 August, US President Donald Trump welcomed Putin at a high-profile summit in Alaska, ending the years of Western separation for Russia and its leader. Several days later, Trump also hosted Ukrainian President Volodimier Zelansky and European leaders at the White House.
Ukraine said it needs a “security guarantee” from other countries that may ensure that Russia would not increase another attack, while Moscow has stopped Ukraine from membership in groups such as NATO or European Union.
Canada has been part of the conversation for more than two years to help secure any kind of peace deal in Ukraine. The negotiations finally declined the coalition of the alliance, a group of nations, who offered to help a peace force funds or employees on the Ukrainian region.
Apart from Canada, the group includes most European nations as well as Japan and Australia. Top Canadian top soldiers have also been part of NATO negotiations to coordinate potential military contribution.
Trump has said that the US will not send soldiers to Ukraine, but may provide air aid to maintain peace.
How did this struggle begin?
Russia attacked Ukraine in 2014, anxing Crimea and was fighting for other regions for eight years before Ukraine started an invasion of February 2022.
Trump incorrectly suggested that Ukraine has started the struggle.
Ukraine says the Russian -backed, autocratic President threatened the 2014 democratic rebellion to endanger Moscow’s control over the country, as Kiev reached close to the European Union. Kiev says that he wants to chart a democratic, western route as a multi-caste country, unlike Moscow’s nationalist story, which overshadows traditional orthodox attitudes.

How does our support pile up against others?
The Kail Institute, which measures the global contribution to Ukraine, ranks 11th in rank based on Canada and GDP as the fifth most generous in raw dollars.
The top donor in raw dollars is America, followed by Germany, UK and Japan. Those who give the highest part of proportional support for economic size include the Netherlands, most Scandinavian countries and Baltic.
The tracker says Canada has supported Ukraine over $ 19.7 billion, while Ottawa has taken it to $ 22 billion, including military, human and financial assistance. This is more than per capita and dollar than France and Italy.
A large part of Ottawa’s support is a loan, underlining the Ukrainian government so that it is capable of finance operations and taking loans.
Canada’s human initiative has an external role, such as re -starting Ukrainian children kidnapped by Russia, maintaining maternal health services and working to detect and remove landmines.
Will we send soldiers to Ukraine? What can we be called to help secure a ceasefire?
Prime Minister Mark Carney will not specify on Friday how Canada can help, but Ukraine will need support on land, air and sea.
“This is a liquid condition; it’s a delicate situation, so I am not going to describe the nuances,” he told reporters.
“Any safety guarantee begins with a strong Ukrainian army. And it means weapon, that means training, it means viability.”
Professor Stephen of Carlton University said that Canada is limited to how much military support it can give. “We really have nothing to send to the shelves to send them,” he said.
It is not clear whether the Canadian soldiers will be on the ground in Ukraine, given that no one agrees to the ceasefire, and Putin says he would not accept NATO soldiers to be deployed in Ukraine.

He said that Canada does not have too much air-petrol capacity or ships that will help secure the Black Sea or sky on Ukraine.
Kolga said that Ottawa could also increase its financial efforts against Russia, such as fulfilling the efforts to seize Russian holdings in foreign banks to finance Ukraine’s war effort, or approve states supporting Russia’s war economy.
Why is it in our interest to help Ukraine?
Kolga said that there is a real threat to Canadian Arctic if the message is conveyed to Putin that he can win the area and respect the land to anx.
