The army inaugurated the war memorial with the names of Poonach citizens, who died due to cross -border firing by Pakistan.

Web Desk, 27/07/2025

Major General Kaushik Mukherjee has inaugurated a new war memorial with the name of Poonch citizens who died due to cross-limit shelling by Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, the general officer of the Indian Army’s ‘Ace of Speeds’ division.

The War Memorial is built by the Durga Battalion of Poonch Brigade at the Ajote War Memorial in Poonch.

Japneet Kaur, a resident of Poonch, whose father died in a firing from across the border by Pakistan, told Annie that it was the desire to see all those who died in the shells from across the border, they should be given the status of martyrs.

He said, “It was our wish that the people who died should be given the status of martyrs. Today, on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, the army built a memorial here to give us some support in our grief,” he said.

He said, “My father’s name was American Singh. I am very happy to see his name here.”

Rameez Khan, a resident of Poonch, whose children died from across the border by Pakistan, said, “The army did a good job … the names of my children were Zain and Zoya … I just wanted them to be given the status of martyrs.”

India launched Operation Sindor on 7 May on 7 April as a decisive military response to the Pahgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed. The Indian armed forces targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, causing more than 100 militants associated with terrorist organizations such as Jai-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen.

After the attack, Pakistan attempted drone attacks with the Line of Control and Jammu and Kashmir as well as border areas, after which India launched a coordinated attack and damaged radar infrastructure, communication centers and air areas at 11 airbase in Pakistan.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, 16 people have been killed due to Pakistani shelling, and 59 others have been injured. (AI)
