Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi addressed the Kargil Vijay Day celebrations at Dras Town, Ladakh on Saturday, where he highlighted India’s “unbreakable unity”, which was displayed in 1999 during Operation Vijay and even after 26 years during Operation Sindoor.
“Keeping in mind the tradition of unwavering Indian unity, the army carried out accurate attacks on the terrorist infrastructure under Operation Sindoor and achieved a decisive victory, effectively vengerated and knocked on Pakistan’s violent attacks, and won,” COAS said while addressing the crowd.
“We gave a chance for peace, but he (Pakistan) worked out of cowardice, which we courageously replied. Operation Sindoor is our resolve, message and reaction. Our air defense stood as a strong wall against drones and missiles,” he said.
In 1999, Operation Vijay Pakistani soldiers reacted the army after crossing India’s borders and capturing the High Hill Post. Conflict, later turned into Kargil war. Kos Dwivedi said that with 199 operations, India gave a similar reply to Pakistan by targeting the terrorist infrastructure with Operation Sindoor Post, with the Pahgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed in Jammu and Kashmir.
Talking about the historical site, which was captured by the Pakistan forces in 1999 and withdrawn, Kos recalled the valor of the soldiers and saluted the people who sacrificed their lives.
“We are standing near Tiger Hill, Tololing and Point 4875, remembering the resolutions and valor of the warriors. We salute those who sacrificed their lives so that we can live peacefully. We remember that with their dedication in their eyes, with whom they passed through difficulties.” There, General Dwedi said during his speech.
This struggle, known as the Kargil War, began in May 1999 when Pakistani intruders crossed the line of control and captured Indian positions with the aim of capturing National Highway 1A, an important artery connecting Srinagar to Leh.
On spotting the intruders, India later launched Operation Vijay. Operation cautiously showed the plan, mold determination and indomitable spirit of forces as the soldiers fought more than two months in the rigid area to take out each intruder and restored Indian control over each post. (AI)
