“We apologize for this incident”: Karnataka Dy CM DK Shivkumar on Bengaluru Stamped

Karnataka Vice President DK Shivkumar on Wednesday offered an apology after 11 people were killed in a stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore after the RCB victory ceremony.

Talking to ANI, DK Shivkumar said, “It should not have happened and we never expected such a large crowd … The stadium has a capacity of 35,000, but more than 3 lakh people were there … Gates (of the stadium) are broken … We apologize for this incident … We want to know the facts and give a clear message …”

He accused the BJP of politicizing the incident. “BJP is doing politics … We are very sorry for the incident. We will work a better solution in future …”

The Congress leader also said that all government programs set for tomorrow have been postponed after the tragedy.

“… Yesterday, except for a cabinet meeting, all programs have been postponed. No ceremony including World Environment Day …”

The Karnataka government announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased killed in the stampede.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed a press conference and said that the government will also provide free treatment to the injured.

The CM said, “There was a big tragedy during the victory ceremony. It took place near the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the deceased. The government will provide free treatment to the injured.”

Expressing deep grief over the incident, CM Siddaramaiah said, “11 died and 33 were injured in stampede. It should not have been a tragedy. The government expresses deep grief over the incident.”

The Karnataka CM further said that he has ordered a magistrate inquiry into the matter.
