Salal Dam gate opened in Rasi district of Jammu and Kashmir

The gates of the Salal Dam on the Chenab River in the Rasi district of Jammu and Kashmir were already closed due to a recent conflict between India and Pakistan, which was on the Pavalgam terror attack.

One of the dams of the dam was opened on Friday morning, possibly to manage overflow due to an increase in the water level.

The gates were closed after India suspended the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, the tension between the two countries increased. Meanwhile, after heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir, the gates of Baglihar Dam were opened on 8 May, which could have flooded.

Despite moving towards an agreement to end enmity, the Government of India maintains its stand on the Indus Water Treaty, which is still in hatred. The treaty was suspended after the Pahgam terror attack.

The Indus system includes the main Indus River, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlage. The basin is mainly shared by India and Pakistan, with a small part for China and Afghanistan.

In 1960, under the Indus Water Treaty between India and Pakistan, all the water of three rivers, ie Ravi, Sutlage and Beas (Eastern Rivers), from an average of about 33 million acres of feet (MAF), were allocated to India for special use.

Western rivers were allocated to Pakistan, except for the average of 135 MAF, an average of about 135 MAF, which is in addition to the domestic, non-abusive and agricultural use of India provided in the treaty.

India has also been empowered to generate hydroelectrics through the Run of the River (ROR) projects on Western rivers, which is subject to specific criteria for design and operation.

To use the water of Eastern rivers, which have been allocated to India for special use, India has constructed Beas on Ravi and Thin (Ranjitsagar) on Sutlej, Pong and Pandoh Dam.

With these storage functions, other functions such as Beas-Sutlej Link, Madhopur-Beaas Link, Indira Gandhi Nahar Project, etc., India has helped India to use most of the water of eastern rivers water.

In his address to The Nation on May 12, PM Modi said that after the surgical strike in 2016 and the air strike in 2019, now Operation is India’s policy against vermilion terrorism. He put India in acting after the Pahgam terror attack with Pakistan as the Indus Water Treaty and said that water and blood could not flow together ”(ANI)
