High on high-end cars, 35 students in trouble for stunts in convoy

SURAT: A group of 35 Class 12 students from a prestigious city-based school drove straight into the hands of the law for allegedly performing stunts and bursting firecrackers on their way to the institute’s farewell function in a convoy of nearly 35 high-end cars on Dandi Road.
After the February 7 reel of the convoy set to the song of a Bollywood flick, Animal, went viral, the police initiated action on Monday and began proceedings against the students and their parents for multiple violations of traffic rules, detaining 12 of the 26 cars.
Dressed in blazers to mark their last day, students set off in luxurious vehicles, capturing videos of their drive using drones and cameras. The video triggered widespread outrage, with citizens questioning the lack of police action against students from a reputed school engaging in dangerous stunts.
Promising strict action, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Amita Vanani said, “We have reviewed the footage and identified multiple violations. The law will take its course, and necessary action will be taken against those responsible.”
Following her statement, Pal police, under whose jurisdiction the school falls, visited the institution to obtain details of the students and their parents. The school’s founder, Vardan Kabra, emphasised that they do not endorse such activities.
“We have fully cooperated with the police and provided all necessary details. A day before the farewell, we emailed parents and students advising them not to arrive in personal vehicles, even if they held a valid driving licence. Instead, we recommended drop-offs by parents or drivers and even arranged buses. No cars were allowed inside the school premises,” Kabra told TOI.
DCP (Zone-5) Rakesh Barot said that the police identified 26 cars from the reel. “Of these, 12 cars were detained from the students’ homes, 9 cars were out of station and will be seized soon, and five used for family functions were expected to be seized in the night.”
“After detaining all the cars, we will verify the driver, licence, and ownership details, and examine the extent of violations before taking further action,” Barot added.
With board exams scheduled in April-May, police are taking a cautious approach to ensure students’ mental well-being is not adversely affected. “We must be careful in our actions so that students are not unduly stressed or disturbed ahead of their board exams,” police officials said.
Founded in 2005 with just six students, the school has grown into a leading institution in Surat, offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum to over 2,200 students across various grades.
