Ranveer Allahbadia controversy takes a twist: Viral joke wasn't original after all

Ranveer Allahbadia, the YouTuber-podcaster behind “BeerBiceps,” found himself in hot water after a provocative remark on comedian Samay Raina’s show ‘India’s Got Latent.’ His question, “Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once and stop it forever?” triggered massive backlash from netizens and public figures alike.
The uproar reached political corridors, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis commenting on the issue, emphasizing that “freedom has limits.” Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate condemned the remark as “perverse,” and digital creator Aashish Chandorkar highlighted the need for ethical digital content.
Faced with mounting criticism, Allahbadia issued an apology, admitting to a “lapse in judgment.” He promised to remove the insensitive content and better curate his platform. “My comment wasn’t inappropriate; comedy is not my forte. I am just here to say sorry. Many asked, Is this how I used the platform? to which he stated, ‘Obviously, this is not how I wish to use it. I am not going to give any context or justification or reasoning behind whatever happened; I am just here for the apology. I personally had a lapse, and judgment wasn’t cool on my path. The podcast is watched by people of all ages. I don’t want to be the person that takes that responsibility lightly, and family is the last thing that I would disrespect. Need to use this platform better; that’s been my learning from this whole experience. I promised to just get better; I have asked the makers to remove the insensitive sections from the video, and all I can say in the end is, Sorry, I hope you can forgive me as a human being,” he said. However, a surprising twist emerged when a post on X revealed that Allahbadia’s controversial question wasn’t original. A resurfaced video showed comedians from the OG Crew cracking the exact same joke on a different YouTube show two weeks earlier. The clip features a woman named Sam and a man named Allen laughing over the remark, sparking debate over whether Allahbadia was unfairly singled out for repeating content that already existed online.

This revelation has reignited discussions around originality, accountability, and ethical content creation in India’s booming digital ecosystem. Is Allahbadia guilty of bad judgment—or simply a casualty of borrowed controversy? The conversation rages on.
