Japanese researchers develop artificial intelligence tool to analyze employee data to predict when new employees will quit

Bosses worried about turnover or wondering how long a new hire will last can now turn to artificial intelligence to learn who might be fired next.

The AI tool was developed by Japanese researchers to help managers provide targeted support to employees and stop them from quitting.

It processes data on company employees, from attendance records to personal information such as age and gender, and was created by Tokyo City University professor Naruhiko Shiratori and a startup in the Japanese capital.

The tool also analyzes data on employees who have left the company or taken leave to create a turnover model for each company.

When data on new hires is fed in, it predicts “by percentage points” who is at risk of quitting, media education expert Shiratori told AFP on Friday.

“We are currently testing the AI tool with several companies, creating a model for each company.”

Bosses can use the results to “advise high-risk employees — without showing raw data, which might shock him or her — that the company is ready to provide support as AI indicates they may be facing difficulties,” Shiratori said.

To create the tool, the researchers built on a previous study that used artificial intelligence to predict the characteristics of college students who are likely to drop out.

Now they’re planning upgrades so that the AI tool can suggest appropriate tasks for new hires by analyzing job interview information as well as their characteristics and personal experiences.

Japanese companies traditionally hire graduates at the same time every year, but about one in 10 university graduates quit within a year, government data shows.

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, about 30% leave the company within three years.
