Singapore:
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Monday that he will step down from office on May 15 and announced that his deputy Lawrence Wong will take over.
The Prime Minister’s Office announced the handover date in a statement.
Li, 72, said in a Facebook post that a change in leadership is an important moment for any country.
The statement said: “I will resign as Prime Minister on May 15, 2024, and Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will be sworn in as the next Prime Minister on the same day.”
Lee has served as Singapore’s third Prime Minister and Secretary-General of the ruling People’s Action Party since 2004.
“Lawrence and the 4G team have worked hard to earn people’s trust, especially during the pandemic,” he said.
“Through the ‘Forward Singapore’ campaign, they are working with many Singaporeans to renew our social contract and set the national agenda for a new generation.”
