The Indian Embassy in Cambodia recently shared a photo of Indian Ambassador Devyani Khobrogade in traditional Cambodian attire, in which she was dressed up like a “fairy”. The Indian envoy dressed up as a “Khmer fairy” to send blessings to the Cambodian people on the occasion of the Khmer New Year.

Ambassador Devyani Khobragade has a deep admiration for Khmer culture and traditions. Dressed with the elegance of a Khmer fairy, she embraces the spirit of the Khmer New Year and embodies the rich bonds of our civilization. Wishing all Cambodian friends a joyful Khmer New Year celebration,” the Indian Embassy in Cambodia said on X (original Twitter).

In these images, diplomats wear traditional Cambodian clothing, which is depicted in ancient Khmer art and mythology. She wore traditional gold jewelry and headdress, paired with a traditional Khmer Sampot (a wrap skirt).

Ms. Khobragade is a 1999-batch Indian Ministry of External Affairs officer. During a career spanning nearly 24 years, Ms. Khobragade served in Indian missions in Berlin, Islamabad, Rome and New York. At MEA Headquarters, Ms. Khobragade has served in various departments including PAI (Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran), Central Europe, Finance and CPV (Consular Passport, Visa).

Cambodian New Year, commonly known as Khmer New Year, is usually a three-day public holiday. In Khmer it is called “Chaul Chnam Thmey” which means “Entering the New Year”. The celebration is based on the traditional Gregorian New Year and takes place on April 13 or 14. In Cambodia, this marks the end of the harvest before the start of the rainy season.
