'Enough war, enough violence': Pope Francis after Iran attacks Israel

Israel-Iran conflict news: Pope Francis calls for dialogue after Iran attacks Israel

Vatican City:

Pope Francis on Sunday urged Iran and Israel to avoid steps that could fuel an “escalation of violence” that would plunge the Middle East deeper into conflict.

Speaking to pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square, Francis said he had been following news of Iranian drone and missile attacks on Israel with concern and pain.

“I sincerely call for an end to any actions that could contribute to an escalation of violence that could drag the Middle East into a more serious conflict,” he said.

He added: “No one should threaten the survival of others. Instead, all countries should support peace and help Israelis and Palestinians live side by side in safety.”

The pope called for a ceasefire and negotiations in Gaza to provide humanitarian aid to its people and help free Israeli hostages held by Hamas during an Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

“Enough war, enough attacks, enough violence. Dialogue, peace,” he said.
