Ofcom investigates whether David Lammy’s LBC show breached broadcasting rules

Ofcom is investigating whether David Lammy’s show on LBC breached broadcasting rules, the regulator said.

The watchdog said on Monday it was investigating whether the Labor frontbencher’s plans for March 29 “breached our rules on politicians acting as news presenters”.

Ofcom said that under the Broadcasting Act, news must be presented with due impartiality, meaning politicians cannot act as newscasters, news interviewers or journalists without special editorial reasons.

As a result, the regulator concluded last month that five programs on UK news channels – featuring politicians as news presenters – breached broadcasting impartiality rules.

Days later, UK news broadcaster Darren Grimes shared footage of Mr Lamy announcing the historic death of Sir Jeffrey Donaldson on March 29. Resigned as leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) following the accusations.

Grimes wrote: “Dear Ofcom, I imagine you will sanction them for this, just like you did UK News.”
