Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel would not agree to a ceasefire after six months of war with Hamas in Gaza unless hostages held in Gaza were released.

His remarks at the start of a weekly cabinet meeting come as a new round of armistice talks in Egypt is about to begin.

Netanyahu said despite growing international pressure, Israel would not give in to the “extreme” demands of Gaza’s Islamist ruler Hamas, which launched a deadly attack on southern Israel on October 7 that triggered war.
