A fire broke out in a residential building in Istanbul on Tuesday, killing 15 people and injuring eight others, the governor of Turkey’s economic capital Istanbul said.

“The fire in the Gayrettepe neighborhood has so far killed 15 people and injured eight others, seven of them seriously,” Governor Davut Gul’s office said in a statement.

The injured have been “transferred to hospitals in the area” and “investigations are ongoing,” authorities added.

Gul told reporters that the fire broke out during construction in the basement of a 16-story building in Gayrettepe, Besiktas district in central Istanbul.

The new Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who rushed to the scene, said that the basement used to be a nightclub.

Imamoglu said: “The fire is under control. Hopefully there will not be more victims.” He expressed his “condolences” to the relatives of the dead and injured.
