Maharashtra approves proposal to change British-era names of eight suburban railway stations
Mumbai:
The Maharashtra Cabinet today approved a proposal to change the British-era names of eight suburban railway stations in Mumbai.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
The eight stations are located on the Western Line, Central Line and Harbor Line of the Mumbai suburban network operated by Central Railway and Western Railway.
As per the proposal, Currey Road station will be renamed Lalbaug, Sandhurst Road station will be renamed Dongri, Marine Lines station will be renamed Mumbadevi, Charni Road station will be renamed Girgaon, Cotton Green station will be renamed Kalachowki and Dockyard Road station will be renamed Mazgaon , Kings Circle station will be renamed Tirthankar Parshwanath.
Sandhurst Road station is considered two stations as it serves both the Central Line and the Harbor Line.
After the legislative approval, the proposal will be sent to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and Railways.
The state government has submitted a proposal to the Union government to rename Mumbai Central Station as Nana Jagannath Shankarsheth Station.
In 2017, the federal government renamed the city’s Elphinstone Road suburban station (named after Lord Elphinstone, who served as Bombay president from 1853 to 1860) as Prabhadevi station, after nearby Prabha Devi temple named.
A few days ago, the name of the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in south Mumbai was changed to include the honorific “Maharaj”. After the addition, it became the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). It was once known as Victoria Terminal, named after Britain’s Queen Victoria.
