Meta rejects Google's VR partnership proposal: report

Reports say Meta is in discussions with hardware companies to build new VR devices (representative)

Meta Platforms has decided not to partner with Alphabet to use Google’s Android XR platform for its virtual and mixed reality Quest headset, The Information reported on Friday.

The report cited sources involved in the talks as saying that Google had suggested that Meta work with it on a new software platform it was developing for virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality headsets.

But such a partnership could hamper Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s plans to “own the next AR, VR and mixed reality computing platform,” the report said.

The report quoted unnamed Meta employees as saying that Meta is already in talks with hardware companies such as South Korea’s LG Electronics to build new VR devices using Quest software.

Meta and LG Electronics did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment, while Alphabet declined to comment.

Meta’s Quest device currently runs an open-source version of Google’s Android operating system, the report said.

Apple released its mixed reality headset Vision Pro last month.
