Woman found hanging at in-laws’ house in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur; family accuses dowry harassment

A 27-year-old married woman was found hanging at her in-laws’ house in a village under Campierganj police station in the district, police said on Wednesday.

They said a case has been registered in connection with the incident and further investigation is underway.

“Jyoti Devi was found hanging at her in-laws’ house on Monday night. We registered a case against the in-laws in this regard on Tuesday evening,” station officer (SHO) Rajkumar Arora said.

Police said the victim, who had married a man named Manish about eight months ago, was found dead hanging from the roof of a room.

The body of the deceased has been sent for autopsy, they said.

Based on a complaint by the victim’s mother, police have lodged a dowry death CRI against her husband and three other in-laws.

“The police complaint stated that Devi was constantly harassed by her husband and in-laws for dowry, leading to the latest incident. The matter is being investigated,” the SHO said.
