An explosion occurred on a residential street in the city center Dutch city Utrecht An emergency services official said at least four people were injured Thursday. It’s unclear what caused the explosion.
The explosion occurred in the afternoon, sparking fires and causing widespread damage that sent people running into nearby shopping streets. Firefighters attempted to extinguish the flames but were unable to immediately enter the damaged home due to concerns about structural damage.
Emergency services spokesman Sjaak Haasnoot said four injured people had been taken to city hospitals. The extent of their injuries was unclear. It was unclear whether there were any casualties.
“It is currently difficult to determine how many victims there are under the rubble,” Hasnut said. “The fire department cannot enter the building because it is still unstable.”
Firefighters said they were investigating how to safely clear the rubble of the destroyed building to determine whether anyone was trapped. Residents whose homes were damaged were placed in a nearby hotel.
