The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday, December 30, was criticized for fielding relatives of Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, a move seen as contrary to its alleged opposition to dynastic politics in civic elections.
The BJP has given tickets to three members of Narvekar’s family for the upcoming BMC elections – his brother and former councilor Makarand Narvekar, sister-in-law Harshita Narvekar and cousin Gauravi Shivalkar-Narvekar.
Defending the party’s decision, Rahul Narvekar said that the candidates were selected on the basis of their performance in their respective civic wards. “There is no one to contest against Makarand or Harshita because of their good work. I don’t think the opposition has any chance of winning these seats. The party will definitely retain them,” he told reporters.
The move has raised questions as the BJP has repeatedly said it discourages dynasty politics, especially in local body elections. According to PTI, all three candidates are expected to file their nomination papers in the presence of the Assembly Speaker.
Elections for 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including BMC, are to be held on January 15 and counting of votes will take place the next day. The last date for filing nominations is Tuesday, while withdrawal of nominations is allowed till January 2.
