About 50 people were killed when their riverboat capsized on Friday in the Central African Republic’s capital Bangui on its way to a village funeral, an official said on Saturday.

“We were alerted 40 minutes after the incident and rescuers managed to pull out about 50 bodies,” civil protection chief Thomas Djimasse told Reuters.

He added in a telephone interview that the search was continuing and more people may have drowned in the Mpoko River.

Government spokesman Maxime Balalou put the death toll at more than 30 and called for better compliance with safety regulations for river transport.
