Former bureaucrat Sukhbir Singh Sandhu was sacked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Thursday ) appointed one of the new election commissioners, the other being Gyanesh Kumar.

Sukhbir Singh Sandhu was born in 1963 and is a 1988-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Uttarakhand cadre officer.
Mr. Sandhu is a graduate in Medicine from the Government Medical College, Amritsar, and also holds an MA in History from Guru Nanak Dev University.
Mr. Sandhu had previously served as the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand and before that, he also held important positions including Chairman of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
He has also served as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development and Secretary in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.
Mr. Sandhu holds a law degree and has written papers on topics such as “Urban Reforms” and “Municipal Management and Capacity Building”. He was awarded the President’s Medal for his services while serving as Commissioner of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation.
