New Delhi:
Election Commissioner Arun Gore resigned weeks ahead of tonight’s Lok Sabha polls. Sources told NDTV that Goel, the second-highest official at the Election Commission, cited “personal reasons” in his resignation letter. The government tried to persuade him not to resign, but he persisted, they said, adding that the process to appoint other election commissioners would begin soon.
Here are five facts about Aaron Gore:
- Arun Goel is a retired bureaucrat and a 1985-batch IAS officer of Punjab cadre.
- He takes over as election commissioner in November 2022. He took voluntary retirement on November 18 and was appointed as the Election Commissioner a day later. He took office on November 21.
- Mr Goel is expected to become the next chief election commissioner after the current chief election commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, steps down in February 2025.
- The 61-year-old will serve until December 2027.
- Following Anup Pandey’s retirement in February and Mr Goel’s resignation, the three-member Election Commission panel is now reduced to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar .
