From insightful conversations about education and leadership to financial literacy and being vulnerable as a man, these are some of the best Black-led podcasts to join in on this Black History Month.

1. Flixwatcher Podcast

Streaming Platform: all streaming platforms

Style: Entertainment and Film

In a streaming age filled with sequels and remakes that often leave us unable to choose what to watch, the hosts of Flixwatcher aim to help uncover movies. Netflix This should not be ignored and should advise listeners about what is really worth their time.

It welcomes a variety of celebrity guests – including past guests Aisling B and Adam Buxton – who usually chooses a movie on Netflix to speak about on the podcast, but for every hundredth episode, hosts Helen Sadler and Kobi Omenaka select movies on Netflix to review.

This time, he has chosen Rian Johnson’s Knives Out and the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis.

At the beginning of the 400th episode of Flixwatcher, co-host Omenaka reflected on his chosen film of the week, Knives Out, in anticipation of the upcoming sequel Knives Out: Wake Up Deadman.

Omenaka talked about the benefits of presenting an original story well, specifically, how it can “eliminate the malaise” we’re going through with franchise media at large.

2. Man Like You Podcast

The Man Like You Podcast is a brand new podcast hosted by Mo Gilligan, Babatunde Aleshe and. eddie tooWhere no topic is off limits.

Every week, the British comedy powerhouses bring their signature humor, raw honesty and unfailing camaraderie as they talk about everything from wild personal experiences to their opinions on the latest trending topics.

In the second episode of the series, Aleche opens up and asks Cady and Gilligan about when they sought help, how their upbringing influenced this, why it can be difficult, starting therapy and what it really means to be vulnerable as men.

But before the conversation goes any further, the trio issue a warning about eating during the recording of their episodes, and encourage listeners to “make yourself comfortable” and do the same.

It was interesting to hear Gilligan talk candidly about instant gratification, social media validation and how it can sometimes affect the way he views his success.

Expect hilarious moments, unexpected tangents, and conversations that go deeper than you thought on the Man Like You Podcast.

3. Savvy Wallet Podcast

Style: finance and business

The Savvy Wallet Podcast is hosted by UK-based financial educator Ato Jay as he aims to make financial literacy accessible to everyone.

Through his podcast, he speaks to “the brightest minds in personal finance, business, and health.”

For episode 192, he talks to Toby Osborne, head of wealth management at The Royal Mint, which provides people with secure ways to buy, sell and store metals such as gold, silver and platinum.

Throughout the episode, Jay and Osbourne discuss the various services offered by the Royal Mint and how gold is becoming a new way that Gen Z and Millennials, primarily Gen Z, are choosing to invest.

They also discuss why people are interested in gold, and Osborne admits that it is now “viewed as a safe haven asset”.

When it comes to who is investing, Osborne says The Gold Mint has seen an increase in the number of female investors since COVID-19, from 10% to 30%.

They also explain how to buy and invest in gold, and what may or may not be the impact of AI.

4. SLT Podcast (Serious Leaders Talking)

The SLT Podcast (Serious Leaders Talking), hosted by assistant headteacher and founder of Moore Education Ziggy Moore and SEND consultant and former deputy headteacher Rena Jackson, focuses on the realities and unique challenges and responsibilities of being a black senior leader in education.

Each episode explores SEND, teacher wellbeing, leadership diversity and systemic reform, offering real conversations, lived experiences and practical solutions for today’s schools.

This week, Moore is alone as a host, but he is joined by Joey Mbakwe, who describes himself as both “teacher and leader”.

In this thought-provoking episode, the pair talk about Mbekwe’s teaching journey, and she takes viewers back to her own experiences at school.

“I remember when I was little and two male teachers would laugh at me,” says Mbakwe, because she didn’t realize then that it was because of the color of her skin.

After many experiences of being treated differently, she explains that it was not until she had an Indian teacher who was “harsh” towards her but “pushed her to aim higher”, that she realized that she was being treated differently because of the color of her skin.

After excelling in school and graduating with a degree in psychology, Mbakwe then became an English teacher, an assistant headmaster, and is now a consultant.

Together, he and Moore discussed the curriculum, what changes should and could be made, and how to speak up when things needed to be changed.

They discuss everything from how Rooks built her career by asking fearless questions, trusting her gut, and refusing to shrink herself to fit someone else’s idea of ​​who she should be.

They also talk about what it means to be a woman who takes up space and why the pressure to be tasteful isn’t worth it.

The most interesting part of the conversation was when the pair started talking about ambition, honesty, reinvention, and the deep self-belief that comes when you have a bigger vision for your life.
