40% of accident victims, pillion riders, do not use helmets: AIIMS study

Most of the victims of road accidents were in the age group of 20 to 40 years.

According to data collected in 2022 at the AIIMS Trauma Center here, 40 per cent of pillion riders on two-wheelers in Delhi did not use helmets, which led to head injuries.

However, data showed that about 85 per cent of two-wheeler riders used helmets while the rest did not wear protective gear, leading to head injuries, AIIMS Trauma Center chief Dr Kamran Farooq said. Resulted in death or morbidity.

He cited data collected at the center between January 21 and December 22.

He further informed that according to the data, about 82 percent of the patients brought dead to the hospital in 2022 were victims of road accidents.

Dr Farooq further said that the hospital received 53,541 trauma patients in 2022, of which about 25 percent were road accident victims.

Dr. Farooq said, most of the victims of road accidents were in the age group of 20 to 40 years. Since this age group is the most active and productive, their falling victim to accidents has a major impact not only on their families but also on the economy of the country.

“Therefore, there should be an organized system so that road accident victims can get immediate help and treatment,” he said.
