Amid reports that several Indian nationals were stranded in Cambodia, lured by job opportunities there but allegedly forced to work illegally online, the MEA said on Saturday it was working closely with Cambodian authorities and around 250 Indians have been Being “rescued and repatriated”.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement that of the 250 people, 75 were rescued in the past three months.
“We have seen media reports of Indian citizens being trapped in Cambodia. Our embassy in Cambodia has been promptly responding to complaints from Indian citizens who were lured by job opportunities in the country but were forced to work illegally online,” it said.
“In close collaboration with the Cambodian authorities, around 250 Indians have been rescued and repatriated, including 75 in the last three months,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement.
The ministry and the Indian Embassy in Cambodia have also issued several warnings to “our nationals” about such scams, the statement said.
The MEA said it issued the statement in response to media inquiries.
“We remain committed to assisting all Indian nationals in Cambodia who seek our support. We are also working with Cambodian authorities and Indian institutions to target those responsible for these fraudulent schemes,” Mr Jaiswal said.
