How do I find the best electric toothbrush
I have been testing electric toothbrushes since 2021. When putting together this guide I considered the following:
- Cleaning Capacity: This is important for electric toothbrushes. We evaluated how well our teeth were cleaned after one and two minute intervals. We also considered how well an electric toothbrush removed plaque and leftover food residue, taking photos of the areas the brush missed before and after cleaning. Only those brushes that had strong cleaning capabilities and were capable of removing deposits are displayed here.
- Cleaning Modes and Settings: We tested each mode and intensity setting of each electric toothbrush, seeing how it felt and whether there was any improvement in cleaning results.
- pressure sensor: It’s easy to apply too much pressure to your teeth when you brush them, which can damage your gums. We preferred brushes that had pressure sensors (beep, light, or vibration) while brushing.
- Two minute timer: Dentist Dr. Praveen Sharma recommends that you should “brush all tooth surfaces with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes.” An electric toothbrush with a timer will help you do this, so we evaluated each brush based on its timing capabilities.
- Battery life and recharging: There’s nothing worse than an electric toothbrush that can’t maintain its charge. We considered how long the brush lasts on a single charge and how easy it is to recharge.
- Price of toothbrush and head: We also considered the price of each electric toothbrush versus the ongoing cost of replacing a brush head. Some of the more premium brushes require expensive replacement brush heads, but it’s worth shopping online for off-brand replacements, especially for the most popular toothbrush brands. There’s no guarantee of quality when purchasing a third-party brush head, but during testing, we didn’t notice any difference in the results.
- additional features: We also evaluated whether the electric toothbrush had additional features and whether they were worth the extra money. For example, with app connectivity, we tested how user-friendly it is to use and whether it really provides the useful information we need.
