When at least one person died and six others were injured cannon fire burst out as Student Celebrated homecoming at Lincoln University, historically black College In pennsylvania,

shooting Students and alumni erupted around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night while attending a tailgate after a football game at the historic Chester County campus, about 45 miles southwest of Philadelphia.

“We don’t have a lot of answers as to what exactly happened,” Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said Sunday. “What I will tell you is that today we are acting as if this is not an incident where someone came onto a college campus with a plan to cause mass damage.”

A man with a firearm was detained, but no charges had been filed as of Sunday. Authorities have not specified whether the man is a suspect.

Authorities are currently investigating whether there was more than one attacker, but said they do not believe there is any threat to the campus or the larger community.

The shooting occurred at Lincoln University following the HBCU's homecoming football game on Saturday. Officials said at least one person died and six others were injured.

Investigators said Sunday the motive for the shooting was not known.

Lincoln University Police Chief Mark Partee said the shooting devastated the school community, which was supposed to be a day celebrating the legacy of the historic university.

“It was a happy occasion – a homecoming, when people come back and they give back to their alma mater, and they reminisce about the good memories of their time at Lincoln University,” Partey said. According to the Delaware News Journal.

“It was disrupted by a shooting that should not have happened, and we are concerned for our students who had to experience it, our alumni who had to experience it, and for our visitors.”

Students said there was tension and silence on the campus after the shooting.

“We heard it, but we didn’t know what was going on,” college senior Giles Abbey told the outlet. “Then we saw people running away.”

Abe said he did not believe the gunman was a student of the school, questioning, “Why would we mess up our homecoming?”

Governor of Pennsylvania Josh Shapiro He also expressed his support to students and staff at HBCUs.

“Join Lori and me in praying for the Lincoln University community,” he wrote.

The Chester County District Attorney’s Office said on social media that local, state and federal law enforcement are investigating the shooting.

The public was urged to avoid the area around the university.

Authorities are asking anyone with video from the scene or information that may assist their investigation to contact the FBI.
