Guwahati, Oct 31 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the Singapore government has sent the toxicology report related to the death of iconic singer and filmmaker Zubeen Garg to the Assam Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
However, the report is yet to physically reach Guwahati, where the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is conducting a detailed investigation into the case.
The Chief Minister confirmed that the SIT has made “substantial progress” in the investigation and is on track to file the chargesheet within the stipulated time frame.
Expressing confidence in the speed and integrity of the investigation, Sarma said, “The team is working day and night to ensure justice to Zubeen Garg.”
Zubeen Garg died on September 19 in Singapore, where he was on a boat trip at sea, sending a wave of grief across Assam and the entire Northeast.
After his death, the state government ordered a high-level inquiry to find out the surrounding circumstances.
His mortal remains were brought back to Guwahati, where thousands of fans gathered to pay their last respects. Recently his wife Garima Garg and family members immersed his ashes in the Brahmaputra.
The SIT, led by senior CID officials, has already made several arrests in connection with alleged tampering and concealment of evidence related to the case.
Those arrested include festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sarma, his two bandmates – Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta.
Besides this, the late singer’s cousin Sandipan Garg, who had traveled with him in Singapore, was also detained along with two of Zubeen Garg’s personal security officers. All of them are now in judicial custody.
Addressing public speculation and criticism, CM Sarma urged people to maintain faith in the investigation process.
He said, “Those questioning justice for Zubeen Garg should reconsider their stand before December 15. The diligent work of the SIT will speak for itself.”
Sarma also warned against politicizing the sensitive matter.
“Some people have tried to draw premature conclusions, but justice will prevail,” he said.
In a separate comment, the Chief Minister hit out at political opponents, accusing Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi of “working as a Pakistani agent”.
Sarma claimed that he had evidence but he would take action only after the ongoing investigation and elections are over.
