Zoran Mamdani As the year progresses to 2026, he will become mayor of New York City, but the celebrations will continue until New Year’s Day.
The Democratic team planned to hold two separate swearing-in ceremonies on Thursday, a small, private one with family at an old subway station around midnight, followed by a larger event in the afternoon that would include a public block party outside City Hall.

Mamdani, for his part, will be sworn in for the first time at Manhattan’s former City Hall subway station, one of the original stations on the city’s underground transit system known for its tiled arches and vaulted ceilings.

Old Town Hall station was designed as the flagship station for the city’s first subway line, but was decommissioned in 1945. Today, apart from the occasional guided historical tour, locals usually only get a glimpse of it when the Line 6 train turns around and heads north at its last stop in the city center.
Mamdani’s office said in a statement that choosing to be sworn in at the station reflects his “commitment to the working people who keep our city running every day.”
“Old City Hall Station was one of New York’s original 28 subway stations, and when it first opened in 1904, it was a physical monument to a city that dared to pursue beauty and built great things that transformed the lives of working people,” Mamdani said.
“This ambition does not have to be a memory limited to our past, or to the tunnels beneath City Hall: it will be the purpose of a government that has the privilege of serving New Yorkers from the buildings above,” he said.

Mamdani’s transition created an inaugural committee that included actor John Turturro, playwright Cole Escola and author Colson Whitehead, as well as advocates, small business owners and campaign staff, who the new mayor’s office said “provided perspective, guidance and cultural sensitivity” to the ceremony.
The public swearing-in ceremony will be accompanied by a party along a stretch of Broadway leading to City Hall. Mamdani’s office expected thousands of people to attend and said there would be performances, music and interfaith elements.
