Russia Is preparing for a “big war” in Europe by 2029, Volodymyr Zelensky Ukraine’s allies were warned in an urgent message.
Posting on X, the ukrainian president Called on the international community to double sanctions Russian economy and weapons to “undermine their capabilities”.
He wrote: “Given the battlefield situation, we do not think Russia will want to stop.
“The problem is that when we look at the Russian military industry, we see that they are increasing their production. In our assessment, they want to continue this war.
“We think that if we push hard, the Russians will need a pause. But we have to recognize that they want a big war, they are preparing to be able to start such a big war on the European continent – in this period – in 2029 or 2030.”
Zelensky added: “I think we have to think about how to stop them in Ukraine now. But at the same time do everything to reduce their capabilities. Not to give them money, which they can still get from energy. And not to give them weapons.”
It comes as the EU is considering how it can raise more money for Ukraine, either by seizing frozen Russian assets, raising money on the capital markets, or by getting some of the 27 EU countries to raise the money themselves.
Russian President Vladimir Putin “Thinks he can outmaneuver us in the fight for Ukraine’s future,” Ursula von der Leyen said, nearly four years after Russia launched an all-out invasion of its neighbor.
“And that’s a clear miscalculation,” said the European Commission president. “So now is the time, with a new impetus, to buy time and unlock Putin’s cynical effort to get them to the negotiating table.”
Meanwhile, the Kremlin said on Thursday that ukraine will have to negotiate with Russia “sooner or later” and claimed that Kiev’s negotiating position would worsen by the day.
Moscow, whose forces are currently trying to take control of the city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine, has accused Ukrainian officials of refusing to engage in peace talks. In response, Kiev says Moscow’s demand that Ukraine give up captured lands under the peace deal is unacceptable and tantamount to surrender.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russia is open to political and diplomatic solutions and wants peace.
His comments follow stalled US-led peace efforts, which have made no progress since talks between Trump and Putin in Alaska in August.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke by phone with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on October 20 to discuss a possible new summit, days after Trump announced it following a phone call with Putin.
Trump later said he had canceled a potential summit. The US President has backed calls for an immediate ceasefire with the military over its current situation in Ukraine.
