Former Team India cricketer Yusuf Pathan is the Trinamool candidate from Baharampur, a Congress stronghold headed by Lok Sabha leader Adil Ranjan ·Representative Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
Although the Congress has not nominated a candidate from Bengal, Mr Chaudhry is likely to seek re-election from the seat he has represented five times in the Lok Sabha.
The Mamata Banerjee-led party today announced candidates for all 42 seats in Bengal, officially stating that the state will not align with non-BJP parties.
The Congress and the Trinamool have come together to form the Indian Alliance – at least on paper – although the alliance has yet to formulate a seat-sharing strategy for Bengal. The Trinamool Party is believed to have offered Baharampur and another seat to the Congress but decided to go it alone as the elder party wanted a bigger share.
Sending a popular figure in Mr Chaudhry’s stronghold is also seen as the Trinamool’s response to Mr Chaudhry’s repeated attacks on the party.
The Congress party was quick to respond, saying it had repeatedly declared it wanted a respectable seat-sharing deal with the Trinamool in West Bengal.
“The Indian National Congress has always maintained that such an agreement must be finalized through negotiations and not unilateral announcements. The Indian National Congress has always wanted the Indian bloc to work together to fight the BJP,” senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh explain.
