He termed the Special Intensive Verification (SIR) exercise as “vote ban” and urged the Center not to curb people’s right to vote.
According to News 18, at an event in Siliguri, Mamata said, “You can send me to jail or cut my throat, but don’t cut the name of even a single real voter.”
“The BJP-led central government is harassing people in the name of SIR. Just as demonetization was ‘demonetisation’, SIR is ‘votebandi’. This is another form of super emergency,” he said, according to news agency PTI.
Banerjee also criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of infiltrating the country, saying India’s security falls under his purview.

According to News 18, they demanded his resignation saying that internal security, CRPF and BSF come under his responsibility.
The West Bengal Chief Minister also termed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as a ‘mistake’ and urged that it should be withdrawn.
According to PTI, Mamata said, “The central government is looting people in the name of GST.”
The Election Commission launched the second phase of SIR exercise in 12 states and union territories, including West Bengal, from November 4.
Other poll-bound states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala are also going to witness this exercise along with UT Puducherry in 2026.
Bihar, which is going to polls in the second phase on November 11, also saw the SIR exercise amid protests by the opposition alleging “vote stealing” by the Election Commission and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
