Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir delivered a passionate speech to the players attending the team’s ongoing training camp before the new Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The IPL 2024 season marks Gambhir’s return with KKR, having left the franchise in 2017. After hanging up his boots, Gambhir joined Lucknow Supergiants as a mentor for two seasons before returning to KKR ahead of the new season. For the uninitiated, Gambhir played for KKR from 2011-17 and the team won the IPL title twice under his leadership.
On his first day on the job, Gambhir’s war cry went viral, stressing the importance of giving players freedom.
“We start the season today. Do everything you can, physically and mentally. This is a very, very proud and successful team. You guys represent a very successful team. Make sure you start with that Train that way, play that way “You keep that attitude on the court. This will be very, very important. The former KKR captain told the KKR team that every player will be treated equally regardless of where they come from.
“So one thing that anyone who plays with me will know about me is that everyone in this group is going to be treated equally. There are no senior juniors. There are no domestic, international. So we have a mission, that It’s about winning this IPL. So everyone needs to follow this simple path. May 26, we should do everything possible and start from today. It won’t start from the 26th, it won’t start from the 23rd,” he added.
“Starting today, that’s what we want to do. So, if we follow the same path and struggle, I’m sure we’ll have a lot of success. So good luck, guys. Have freedom. Enjoy’ yourself . You can ask questions, whether behind closed doors or in front of everyone. I can assure you that we will be absolutely honest with each and every one of you from a support staff perspective,” Gambill concluded.
KKR will kick off the tournament on March 23 against SunRisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
