Elon Musk’s x has launched a new location feature that reveals dozens of MAGA-branded accounts located outside the US.
The ‘About this account’ tool provides information about where the account is located, now one can view the users country or region by tapping on the signup date on their profile.
It also shows how many times an account has changed their username, as well as how many social media apps they’ve downloaded.
X said the new feature was “an important first step in securing the integrity of the global city square” by improving transparency and allowing users to verify the authenticity of content viewed on the platform.
Users quickly discovered that many of the right-wing influencer accounts purporting to be from the US were actually shown to be based in places like Russia, Pakistan, and Nigeria.
A prominent account that uses a ‘handle’‘Maga Nation’Which has around 400,000 followers, apparently based in Eastern Europe. Another account with username ‘ultramaga trump 2028‘was shown to be located in Nigeria. The account has since been suspended.
“The exposure of all these MAGA accounts as foreign actors trying to destroy the United States is a complete vindication of what I and many people here, like Democrats, have been warning about.” wrote Democratic influencer Harry Sisson.
The new feature was also criticized for inaccuracies, with other users noting that many prominent accounts showed incorrect information.
Transparency Tools claims that American Internet personality Hank Green is based in Japan, while Massachusetts-based software maker Avid Pro Tools is shown to be based in Spain.
Shortly after its launch, X acknowledged some accuracy issues and removed the registration country of user profiles due to data “not being 100 percent” for older accounts.
“There are some critical bugs that will be resolved by Tuesday,” Nikita Bear, the company’s product chief, wrote in a post.
“If any data is inaccurate, it will be updated periodically based on the best available information.”
