World Health Organization: Cancer cases will increase by 77% by 2050

“More than 35 million new cancer cases are expected in 2050,” a statement said

Geneva, Switzerland:

The World Health Organization’s cancer agency warned on Thursday that the number of new cancer cases will rise to more than 35 million by 2050, a 77% increase from 2022.

The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) lists tobacco, alcohol, obesity and air pollution as key factors in the estimated rise.

“More than 35 million new cancer cases are expected in 2050,” a statement said, a 77% increase from the approximately 20 million cases diagnosed in 2022.

“The rapid increase in the global cancer burden reflects population aging and growth, as well as changes in people’s exposure to risk factors, some of which are related to socioeconomic development.

“Tobacco, alcohol and obesity are key factors in rising cancer rates, while air pollution remains a major driver of environmental risk factors.”

The World Health Organization said the largest increases in cases are expected in the most developed countries, with 4.8 million more new cases expected by 2050 compared with estimates for 2022.

But in percentage terms, countries at the low end of the Human Development Index (HDI) used by the United Nations will see the largest proportional increase – a 142% increase.

Countries in the mid-range are expected to see 99% growth, the report said.

“Similarly, cancer mortality rates are expected to almost double in these countries by 2050,” the World Health Organization said.

Freddie Bray, head of the cancer surveillance unit at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, said: “The impact of this increase will not be felt evenly across countries with different HDI levels.

“Those with the fewest resources to manage the burden of cancer will bear the brunt of the global cancer burden.”
