a fire broke out According to local media, a 20-year-old woman living on the second floor sprayed a flammable substance on the cockroach and burned it with a lighter.
The fire spread to nearby bedding and garbage heaps.Police said.
The incident occurred around 5.35 a.m. Monday in Osan city of Gyeonggi province, south of Seoul, police said.
The fire quickly spread to the fifth floor of the building, filling the stairwell with thick smoke.
Police said the woman, who has not been named, will be charged with causing death by negligence.
The victim, a Chinese woman in her 30s, lived in the same building with her husband and two-month-old baby. As the fire engulfed their apartment, the couple called for help from the window before handing the infant to a neighbor in the next block, less than a meter away.
The woman’s husband managed to climb down to safety, but fell while trying to follow her. He was taken to Ajau University Hospital but died five hours later. The child survived safely.
Firefighters brought the fire under control within about 40 minutes, but eight other residents also suffered breathing problems due to the smoke.
Investigators believe the couple tried to escape through the window after finding the corridor blocked by smoke and flames. The five-storey building contained shops on the ground floor and 32 residential units above.
Authorities said the suspect had used the same pest-control method before without incident. Police are investigating whether safety codes or construction materials contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
Makeshift flamethrowers, typically using lighters and aerosol sprays, have become a popular DIY pest-control trend on social media. In 2018, an Australian man similarly set his kitchen on fire while attempting to kill cockroaches.
