A shark killed a woman and seriously injured a man off Australia’s east coast on Thursday, police said.
Emergency services were called to the beach at Crowdy Bay, 360 kilometers (224 mi) north. sydneyIt followed reports that two men in their 20s were bitten by a shark at 6.30am, a police statement said.
Police said witnesses helped the couple before ambulance paramedics arrived, but the woman died at the scene.
Police said the man suffered “serious injuries” and was taken by helicopter to hospital in critical condition.
Police The circumstances of the attack have not been detailed.
Police said they would contact experts to determine the species of shark responsible.
The beach at Crowdy Bay National Park was closed to swimmers following the attack.
The national park is known for beach camping, fishing spots and hiking tracks.
A man in his 50s was killed by a shark off a Sydney beach in September. Two parts of the man’s surfboard were recovered from the scene at Long Reef Beach.
