A video showing a woman cooking noodles in an electric kettle inside an AC coach of an Indian train has attracted the attention of the Central Railways. The Maharashtrian woman, who plugged a kettle into the power socket of the coach, sparked widespread outrage and concern over passenger safety.
Power sockets in train coaches are only for mobile and laptop charging, and using high-voltage appliances like electric kettles can cause fire, supply disruption and malfunction of the AC system.
The video attracted immediate attention of Central Railway as soon as it was displayed on X. Responding to a post, the official X account of Central Railway confirmed: “Action is being initiated against the channel and the person concerned,” it wrote.
It also issued a stern warning that using electric kettles inside trains is “strictly prohibited, unsafe, illegal and a punishable offence.”
The railway authority said such an act could lead to a fire incident and could also be disastrous for other passengers. “This may also cause disruption in power supply and malfunction of AC and other electronic ports in the train,” officials said.
Advising passengers to desist from such ‘dangerous behaviour’, it read: “If they notice any such activity, they are requested to immediately report to the concerned authorities to ensure safety.”
Many social media users condemned the woman’s act, calling it a serious security threat and demanded concrete action against those involved. One user commented, “It is necessary to take action against such a woman. Her behavior is a danger to other passengers.”
Another user questioned how the device was allowed inside the train despite the security scan conducted while entering the train station. “Such incidents occur due to safety lapses and failed inspection by railway staff,” he said.
One user commented, “It is important that all travelers understand that this is not a hack but a serious security threat. Hope this serves as a strong warning to others against attempting such dangerous stunts for the sake of content. Public safety should always come first.”
In another post, Central Railways urged passengers to be conscious of their actions while travelling. It reads, “Be responsible, travel responsibly! Train charging points are only for mobiles and laptops. Avoid plugging in any other device to prevent overheating. Let’s keep your journey safe and worry-free.”
