A powerful winter storm, described by meteorologists as a severe cyclone, swept eastward from the Plains on Sunday, setting off a chain reaction of snow, ice, rain and severe weather expected to affect much of the country.

In the South, meteorologists are warning that severe thunderstorms are expected, heralding the arrival of a strong cold front, sometimes called a “blue borer,” bringing a sudden drop in temperatures and strong northerly winds that will end days of record-breaking heat in the region.
Over the next 48 hours, the cyclone is expected to produce heavy snow and blizzard conditions across the Midwest and Great Lakes, with new englandthere are thunderstorms and widespread strong winds in the eastern and southern United States.
The storm is expected to intensify as it moves eastward, drawing energy from a dramatic clash between cold air over southern Canada and unusually warm air over the southern United States, according to the National Weather Service.
It comes after thousands of flight delays and cancellations were reported across the Northeast and Great Lakes earlier this weekend due to snowfall, sending thousands of people onto roads and airports during the busy travel period between Christmas and New Year’s.
On the other side of the country, California experienced a fairly dry weekend after powerful storms battered the state, bringing heavy rain, flash flooding and mudslides. At least four people died, including a man who was found dead in a partially submerged car near Lancaster on Friday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported.
