Windows 11 Paint and Photos apps: Follow these steps to remove background images

Last updated: February 10, 2024 14:00 US Standard Time

Microsoft’s popular PC platform Windows 11 comes with built-in photo editing software such as Paint and Photos. These apps have features that allow users to change the background color of an image to a solid color or remove it completely without downloading additional third-party apps. Furthermore, this feature enables users to remove background from any image with just one click, just like Photoshop’s built-in feature.

The Windows 11 Paint app can be used to remove the entire background of an image and replace it with transparency. However, users should remember that if they want to save an image with a transparent background, they must save it as a PNG file. Other formats such as JPG do not allow transparent images.

Here’s how to replace an image’s background with a solid color or remove it entirely using Windows 11’s built-in Paint and Photos apps:

How to remove background from an image using Paint

1. Find the image whose background you want to remove.

2. From the context menu, right-click the image and select Open with > Paint.

3. With Paint open, go to the Image section at the top.

4. Click the Remove Background icon.

5. Wait for Paint to clear the background.

6. After that, you will see the edited image.

7. Save the image without the background.Select file options

8. Click “Save” in the “Paint” menu bar, or use the shortcut key Ctrl+S.

At the same time, Paint also allows users to delete only part of the image’s background.

To remove part of the background from an image

– Open Paint and select an image.

– In the Select section at the top, click the down arrow icon and select Rectangle. (The Freeform selection tool cannot be selected by the user through the application. Using it disables Paint’s background removal functionality.)

– To remove the background from a portion of the image, use the Rectangle Tool.

– Once you have made your selection, select the “Remove Background” option from the top “Image” section.

– Wait for Paint to remove that part of the background before saving the image.

Here’s how to change the background of an image to a solid color:

1. Select an image in the Photos app.

2. Open the “Edit Image” menu in the top bar (or press Ctrl+E)

3. Select the Background Removal and Replace tool, represented by the icon of a person with a line behind it.

4. Select the Replace option in the right pane.

5. Select a color from the color palette to fill the current background of the image. (If you know the hexadecimal or RGB code for a color, you can enter it in the box provided to quickly find the color you want.

6. Once you are done with the colors, you can click the Apply option to apply the settings or select Reset Background at the bottom of the right pane to reset your preferences.

7. You can overwrite the original image with the edited image or save the new image as a copy.
