Will poor network lead to BSNL split again? Users return to Airtel and Jio networks

BSNL has been in the news for the past few months. In July, hundreds of thousands of users migrated their numbers to BSNL’s network after plans from private telcos became expensive. The main reason is that the recharge plans of government telecom companies are 40% to 60% cheaper than those of Airtel, Jio and Vi. Users who have transferred their numbers to BSNL will be transferred to the original operator again. According to a recent report, most users are plagued by poor network quality from public sector telecom companies.

Users who have done MNP exit

According to MNP regulations, if a user changes telecom operators, they must wait 90 days before switching to the new or old operator. Most users who ported their numbers to another network in July returned to their original telecom operators after 90 days. According to a TRAI report, over 5.5 million new users were added to the BSNL network in the past three months. Most of these users use MNP (i.e. Mobile Number Portability) to connect to BSNL’s network.

Bad internet creates divisiveness

BSNL had the largest number of mobile subscribers in the 2000s. The number of BSNL subscribers is gradually decreasing due to the ease of connectivity provided by private telecom operators. Due to lack of 4G services at BSNL and connectivity issues, the government telecom company has only 2% to 4% subscribers except in some telecom circles. However, the government has announced an allocation of over Rs 80,000 this year to revive BSNL.

The company has decided to install 100,000 new 4G/5G towers to improve network connectivity. To date, more than 50,000 new 4G towers have been installed. Despite this, users are still facing network connectivity issues. Therefore, users who migrated to BSNL network will also go back to their old network. A report released by IIFL Securities on December 6 shows that most users living in rural and small towns are returning to old operators.
