jamie smithdismissal in EnglandThe second innings of the first Ashes Test was a controversial moment on another exciting day of cricket.
England continued their momentum from day one with the dismissal of Nathan Lyon early and a lead of 99 runs in the morning session.
However, Australia Struggled after lunch and were helped by Scott Boland’s brilliant bowling. Mitchell StarcSaw the tourists lose four wickets for 11 runs in just 19 balls.
Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Harry Brook and Joe Root were all out during the combined spell of the two experienced Australians and England really collapsed when Starc dismissed Ben Stokes.
Smith was the only recognized batsman left and he attempted to take a short ball from Brendan Doggett down the legside.
There was a strong appeal from Travis Head at short leg, but the umpire initially ruled it not out, before Australia decided to seek a review.
This required a five-minute consultation on technique with the third umpire, who used the snicko, video replays and advanced photographs to decide that Smith had made contact with the ball.
As the review progressed, replays showed a clear separation between bat and ball, at the same time Snicket recorded a noise, leading England fans and some commentators to believe that Smith would be ruled not out.
This was not the case as the third umpire determined that the grumbling at the snicker was enough evidence to overturn the on-field decision.
According to TNT Sports pundit Steven Finn, the Snico technology is slightly different from the Ultra Edge technology used in England and allows for a frame discrepancy between the images and noise, which explains why the photos were out of sync with the images shown to the third umpire.
A similar incident happened in Australia’s first innings but on that occasion Marnus Labuschagne was declared not out.
Smith’s dismissal was one of nine English wickets to fall in the afternoon session of the second day, as the tourists were bowled out for 164 and Australia needed 205 runs to win the Test.
