A Premier League statement said: “The Premier League wishes to acknowledge the circumstances which have led to the number of matches on Boxing Day being reduced this season – impacting an important tradition in English football.
“There are now a number of challenges in Premier League fixture scheduling inherent in the expansion of European club competitions – which led to amendments to our domestic calendar ahead of last season, including a change to the FA Cup. Despite being a 380-match competition since 1995, this ultimately left the Premier League as a 33-weekend competition – fewer than last season.
“With fewer weekends to work with, the league is tied to how the calendar falls. The league can rest assured that there will be more Premier League matches on Boxing Day next season – because the date falls on a Saturday.”
The Premier League said: “As in previous years, and in keeping with our commitment to clubs, special arrangements have been made to allow more time between games to be played during the festive period. This will allow more time for players with extended rest periods between rounds 18, 19 and 20 to ensure no club plays within 60 hours of another match.”
